“Tune into Phonics” is an album from award-winning songwriter and Montessori educator Frank Leto, designed to make early literacy fun, engaging, and musical. Blending catchy melodies with intentional phonics instruction, this collection of songs helps young learners build essential reading skills in a series of musical lessons.

Created in collaboration with the team behind Chloe's Reading Clubhouse—including speech therapists and reading experts—this project combines science-backed strategies with engaging, educational musical experiences.

Each track focuses on a core literacy concept - such as letter recognition, rhyming, syllables, long and short vowel sounds, blending two and three sounds, identifying words within sentences, alliteration, and more! With engaging rhythms and clear, child-friendly lessons woven into every tune, Tune into Phonics is both a learning tool and a joy for classrooms, homes, and early childhood programs. When combined with the visual materials included in this packet that accompany the album, these musical lessons become multi-sensory and will enhance the learning experience.

“Tune into Phonics” focuses on ways to use music to introduce phonics and increase language development in young children. These series of musical lessons provides practical strategies for encouraging key phonics foundations while making learning interactive, fun and easy for teachers to incorporate into their classroom. The combination of music with phonics instruction aligns with several key aspects of Montessori education:

  • Engagement of Multiple Senses: By incorporating music, children engage both their auditory and kinesthetic senses, which strengthens their understanding of phonics. This multi-sensory approach is proven to improve memory retention and enhance phonemic awareness.
  • Rhythm and Repetition: Music provides a rhythmic, repetitive structure that mirrors the Montessori principle of repetition for mastery. This repetition helps children internalize the foundations of reading, facilitating more effective learning.
  • Child-Centered Learning: Montessori emphasizes individualized learning, allowing each child to progress at their own pace. Music supports this by creating a fun, flexible environment where children can be introduced to phonics in a low pressure way and at a speed that works for them.
  • Emotional and Social Development: Phonics through music fosters emotional growth, as singing and participation encourages collaboration among children. It creates opportunities for social interaction, a sense of community and confidence as they complete a song and activity.

These visual materials that accompany the album can be used alongside the songs as a helpful tool to introduce each topic and extend the learning experience and lesson after listening. They were created to support and introduce these concepts in an engaging way. Feel free to use them in whatever way works best for your classroom or home. I hope they help spark a lifelong love of reading for your children. Enjoy!  ~ Frank
